Webvan wrote:Worst... Maybe as far as disappointment, Wing Commander. yeah, some peeps will say "but that was great!", but it really flopped pretty badly, and it was bad, and not even making it as a cult classic, and it was bad... and I don't mean good-bad, but just... bad.
Sibyyl wrote:Actually I will admit that Wing Commander was one of my sci-fi guilty pleasure movies. This, along with Timecop, Sliders (TV show), Quantum Leap, and Primer (no one I know, besides myself, likes this movie). I never saw the movie but I remember a live action CD-ROM Wing Commander game narrated by Mark Hamill. I never got to play it but I could always hear it coming from the family room computer while I spent hours each day chained to the kitchen sink. Yeah I missed out on a lot of great media during those horrible years, and I knew about all of it being available, just out of reach.
Timecop was pretty great. I have to admit though, that the thing I liked most about it was Mark Hamill. But it also was just a generally higher convention quality than the big budget films we have today--by that I mean that the basic stuff was more realistic, unlike today's movies where everything takes place in a completely different universe where even the most mundane things happen completely differently from real life. I get so tired of those and will prefer some of the most mundane crap over films that insult the intelligence of viewers with Down's Syndrome.
I got into watching Sliders recently. Good show for its time. I've only seen about 8 episodes or so, but I started to get tired of it by that point.
I used to watch Quantum Leap with my dad. I liked the two main characters and I thought they had some real chemistry, but it always bothered me when he'd be someone else and still look like himself. Still a great show. I really should boot it up and start watching again. I never got tired of it, I just joined the military and then my dad died. I guess it'll bring back good memories.
And you can go ahead and add two more to that list of people who liked Primer. My brother Matthew is into indie films with thought-provoking plots, and he finds some rather interesting titles. I really enjoyed that movie and I was just blown away by the work they put into the realism and plausibility, and the depth of the explanations. For a science nerd like me, it really was like coming up for air after holding my breath underwater for the last several years.
Blade Runner was great, as was 2001: A Space Odyssey. I like all of the Next Generation Star Trek movies. Insurrection was originally my favorite, but as I look back I find that both Generations and First Contact are especially memorable, and I didn't like Nemesis when I first watched it but I saw it recently and it clicked a lot better that time. But Voyager was always my favorite series. I really wish we could get some Voyager and Deep Space 9 movies. Yeah, I'm totally a Trekker. Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. DaReaper wrote:its only kinda sci-fi, s its in the future, but Equilibrium is one bad ass movie I just watched Equilibrium. It's cyberpunk, very much sci-fi. The core philosophy of sci-fi is to extrapolate on human advancement and tell a story that hasn't happened yet but could happen. Cyberpunk tells grim tales of dystopian societies in which a few elites control the masses through various ruthless means, often contradicting their own ideals. It is common in such stories for the elite to paint a clean, flawless fantasy world around themselves to cover up the broken and tattered world beyond that they have forsaken.
Equilibrium is some excellent science fiction, and I loved it! Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. Train Wing Commander. Get in the Squad Commander or Wing Commander position. I don't see the appeal of Enemy Mine. I like the basic idea that two races at war can come together, but what makes the movie difficult for me to stomach is the unlikability of Dennis Quaid's character. Right from the outset, I feel like these aliens are good people, and I spend pretty much the whole movie waiting for the human hero to come around. I kind of wish the human had died and the alien could have gotten help from someone actually helpful.
It was like District 9 in that way, only without all the cool effects and much better dialogue and character development.
Also, both of those movies had a very distinctly black alien who was completely passive and helpful being misunderstood by a clearly white human who had grown up learning to hate black aliens for no reason. I acknowledge the realism but I don't like to watch it. Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. Train Wing Commander. Get in the Squad Commander or Wing Commander position. I thought Gosset did great. It was Quaid that sucked, and he's usually such a great actor. Oh well. Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. Train Wing Commander. I'm talking less about Enemy Mine and more about District 9, but I really feel that both stories were trying to compare an alien with black people. And him being played by Louis Gossett isn't what I'm talking about. Sure, it was obvious that there was a black guy in the suit, but there were plenty of other subtle hints that had nothing to do with the actor. Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. It really makes me sad when so-called Trekkers watch JJ Abrams' monstrosity and actually say that they are relieved he didn't break any of the elements that make it Star Trek. I'd ask them to point out any that he didn't break, but I know they wouldn't be able to come up with one. Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. Train Wing Commander. I don't feel that Dune was a bad movie, but I haven't seen it since I was a teen, and I didn't reallt get it then. The only things I really remember are 20,000 A.D. and giant sandworms that Final Fantasy X totally ripped off. Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. Train Wing Commander. I liked Avatar, but to me it was a fantasy adventure. I guess I never took it as a sci-fi, and sorta didn't realize people think of it as a sci-fi till after I watched it, so maybe that saved it for me. It doesn't really have any sci-fi elements, just space and future themes re-hashed from other works. Well, the idea of having remote-controlled bodies is kinda sci-fi until they dispense with every last shred of reality and allow the remote controlled unit to become the guy's new body, as if they couldn't just go and physically unplug him.
